Highlights of the Carabao Cup first-round match between Bury and Sunderland

George Honeyman scored the only goal of the game as Sunderland edged past Bury 1-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.

In a game that saw chances at a premium, the 22-year-old chipped over Bury goalkeeper Joe Murphy in the 69th minute to seal the Black Cats' spot in the second-round draw.

The Shakers saw their captain Stephen Dawson substituted in the 16th minute as he was stretchered off with a knee injury and never truly tested Sunderland's defence.

George Honeyman says scoring his first goal for Sunderland was something he will never forget following their Carabao Cup first-round victory against Bury

Simon Grayson included midfielder Darron Gibson for the first time since the Black Cats instigated a disciplinary process against him after footage emerged of him criticising team-mates in a bar.

The visitors had two excellent chances early on with Lewis Grabban nodding a Brendan Galloway cross just wide and Murphy saving smartly from Aiden McGeady.

The Shakers were then forced into an early change when Dawson was carried off after appearing to injure his knee in a seemingly innocuous challenge with Gibson.

Honeyman was far more sure-footed when his opportunity came in the 69th minute as he collected Ndong's pass to the right of the goal and lifted his effort over Murphy and into the net.

Substitute Jermaine Beckford came closest to an equaliser but fired wide while Ndong could have scored himself at the other end when he rifled a half volley over.
