Promotion hopefuls battle past Chester

An Andy Barcham goal was enough to give promotion-chasing Gillingham the points in a 1-0 win over a dogged Chester side. Barcham struck from close range after 79 minutes following a positive run and cross from the right flank by substitute Jaime Peters which left him with the easy task of tapping home. The game had been heading for stalemate with chances few and far between. Chester had a decent claim for a penalty turned down after 20 minutes when Richie Partridge appeared to be tripped by Stuart Lewis, but they generally offered little threat up front. Ryan Lowe hit a shot from distance which was easily saved by keeper Simon Royce, and the keeper was also on hand to palm away an effort from Partridge which was creeping inside the near post. The Gills then claimed the points through Barcham's late goal, although the home side were unfortunate four minutes from time, as a Kevin Roberts header was cleared off the line by Lewis, the ball striking the post on its way out.
