Two penalties from Chesterfield midfielder Jamie Lowry secured a 2-1 victory which sent Notts County crashing to their first league defeat of the season at Saltergate.
Lowry beat Russell Hoult in the 77th and 80th minutes after Jack Lester and Drew Talbot had been brought down.
Mike Edwards headed in an 83rd-minute free-kick but it was not enough to rescue County who were second best on the night.
Chesterfield had played the better football in the first half and would have been in front but Lester and Talbot wasted good chances.
Hoult saved at the feet of Lester early in the second half but Chesterfield went in front when John Thompson brought down Lester and Lowry blasted the penalty into the bottom right corner.
He beat Hoult for a second time when Stephen Hunt fouled Talbot near the touchline and, although Edwards gave County hope, they could not deny Chesterfield a deserved victory.
