Marc Tierney's early goal was enough to earn Colchester a 1-0 win against Stockport in what could have been Jim Gannon's final match as County manager.
Hatters boss Gannon is set to hold talks with Brighton on Wednesday morning regarding their vacant managerial position after being given permission to speak to the Seagulls by chairman Martin Reid.
Gannon's side went behind in the 17th minute as Tierney's header flew in off the underside of the crossbar from Kem Izzet's cross.
County were then denied an equaliser three minutes later, with Us' on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Walker pulling off a superb save, somehow palming away Johnny Mullins' powerful header from Dominic Blizzard's corner.
Izzet and David Perkins both went close for Colchester before half-time before Stockport sent on Matty Mainwaring and Oli Johnson at the break in a bid to force an equaliser.
But it was Colchester who looked the more likely, with Perkins and Izzet both going close before the end.
