    Derby v Leeds

In, arguably, the pick of the two Championship play-off ties, Leeds have the chance to redeem themselves having spurned their chance of automatic promotion following a storming start to the season.

With the shock appointment of Marcelo Bielsa, the Whites transformed themselves from a mid-table side to a side who occupied top spot for large spells of the season. But after Spygate thrust them under the spotlight, their form suffered from mid-January and they entered a slump that they could not arrest.

The play-offs have arrived and you can watch every single game live on Sky Sports Football. Here is how to watch...

Towards the end of the season they began to swap positions with eventual runners-up Sheffield United, but a 2-0 defeat to Brentford at Griffin Park all-but ended their hopes of a top-two finish. Defeats to Wigan and Ipswich compounded a miserable end to a rollercoaster campaign ahead of the play-offs.

Their hosts secured a top-six berth on the final day of Frank Lampard's debut managerial season, but as Rams fans will be all-too aware, this is just the first hurdle they must surpass having faltered in the play-offs on numerous occasions over the last 10 years.

Twice these two sides have met this term and twice Derby have been on the losing side, yet with just one defeat in their final 12 league fixtures, Lampard's side will fancy their chances to reach the Wembley final on 27 May.

    Team news

Derby pair Martyn Waghorn and Duane Holmes are both doubtful for the first leg of their side's play-off semi-final against Leeds. Forward Waghorn was forced out of last week's home win against West Brom, which sealed the Rams' play-off place, due to an Achilles injury.

Midfielder Holmes has been nursing a thigh strain in recent weeks and he was withdrawn later on in the same game. Defender Richard Keogh is expected to play despite a minor groin strain, while boss Frank Lampard has no other new injury concerns.

Leeds will be without suspended striker Patrick Bamford, who completes a two-game ban after being found guilty of simulation in the recent home draw against Aston Villa. Central defender Pontus Jansson faces a late fitness test due to an ankle injury and is doubtful.

Forward Tyler Roberts will play no part in the first leg because of a similar problem that has forced him to miss the last two matches. Boss Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Stuart Dallas will play after overcoming a recent knee injury, but Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas (both knee) remain long-term absentees.

    The managers

Derby boss Frank Lampard: "The fact that we at home for the first game, we have to focus on ourselves. We are very aware of Leeds and the team that they are through playing them and studying them.

"Nothing is taken for granted in modern day football so no matter what the first leg says, the second leg will be important for both teams for whatever reason. That's how it should be. Togetherness, desire, passion, those words say it all. We need to take them into these two games.

"The lads are playing well so I would be a mad man to change 11 players, but at the same time it is good to keep everyone on their toes a little bit.

"In terms of the players we will need the squad. If we are to play three games, we will need impact from not just the 11, we will need impact from much more than that."

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa: "This event is a football episode which everyone will want to live. You have two prizes at the end, both semi-final games are going to be very attractive and the winner will play a final at Wembley, which will be a spectacle.

Marcelo Bielsa called an impromptu press conference for 5pm on Wednesday
Image: Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds had looked a shoo-in for automatic promotion in the first half of the season.

"The team that wins at Wembley will go up and get promoted and you can't have a bigger goal than this. The motivation to face these challenges comes by itself and the preparation is a second aspect.

"I am familiar with this situation, what I can tell you is that I have been through this many times with Copa Libertadores, the Olympic Games, with Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League and the Copa America.

"If you take the predictions and compare it to the result, you would find maybe 50 per cent of predictions which are right and 50 per cent which are wrong. There is no point making any prediction about it.We don't feel as winners before playing the game or losers before playing the game."

    Opta stats

Leeds United won both matches in the 2018-19 Championship season against Derby County, the first time they've achieved this feat in a single season since 2001-02 when both clubs were in the Premier League.

Since winning seven successive home games in all competitions against Leeds between May 2007 and December 2014, Derby have only managed one victory in their last four (D1 L2).

Derby County manager Frank Lampard said his players will not be distracted by the 'spygate' controversy that surrounded his side’s last meeting with Leeds United

Leeds United's Kemar Roofe scored in both Championship fixtures against Derby in the 2018-19 campaign (3 goals), bagging a brace in Leeds' 4-1 victory away from home.

This will be Derby's eight venture into the second tier play-offs; no side have taken part in more. They've only won promotion once in those previous seven seasons in the second tier play-offs (in 2006-07).

Leeds will be participating in their fifth Football League play-off campaign, they've never won promotion via this method, losing most recently against Millwall in the League One play-off semi-finals in 2009.

The team to finish sixth in the Championship has won promotion via the play-offs in just one of the last 13 seasons - Blackpool in 2009-10.

The side to finish third in the second tier has won promotion through the play-offs (current format) on 11 occasions (37%), more than any other position.

    Championship play-off record since 1989

    Derby: Winners (2007), runners-up (1994, 2014), semi-finalists (1992, 2005, 2016, 2018).

    Leeds: Runners-up (2006)

Leeds finished the 2018-19 Championship campaign with just one point from their last four games (D1 L3), their worst winless run of the season.

Derby County have lost just one of their last 12 league games (W6 D5), with a current unbeaten run of six (W4 D2).

Leeds United's Pablo Hernández created 116 chances in the Championship during the 2018-19 campaign; 19 more than any other player. Furthermore, only Brentford's Said Benrahma (14) provided more assists than Hernández (12).

    Prutton's prediction

In terms of drama this game should be right up there, even without taking into consideration what happened between these sides earlier in the season. More importantly for Derby, they have been given a footballing lesson by Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds twice, and you can only hope for the Rams' sake that Frank Lampard has learned from that.

Leeds, in form terms, are not playing well. They picked up just a point from their final four games and now they have to pick themselves up again quickly. This should be closer than the two league games were.
