The Viola had previously won just one match all season but Sinisa Mihajlovic received the backing of club owner Andrea Della Valle in midweek and will now be much happier with life following a hard-fought victory.
Marco Donadel broke the deadlock for Fiorentina in the 34th minute but the game remained in the balance until deep into the second half.
Alberto Gilardino made it 2-0 with eight minutes remaining and his goal proved crucial as Alessandro Parisi replied for Bari just before the final whistle.
The result catapulted Fiorentina into mid-table, with 15th-placed Bari one of the teams they have overtaken in a congested section of the standings.
