Liverpool v Crystal Palace preview: Ruben Loftus-Cheek in line for Eagles debut
Wednesday 19 July 2017 13:40, UK
Ruben Loftus-Cheek could make his Crystal Palace debut as they play Liverpool in the Premier League Asia Trophy, live on Sky Sports.
The midfielder has joined the Eagles on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea and could feature during the pre-season match in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
New Palace manager Frank de Boer is expecting a tough test against the Reds, and is hoping his side can put their work so far to good use during the game live on the new Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event channels from 1pm, with kick-off at 1.30pm.
"It's a test for the ideas that you've tried to put across and doing what we've trained on for the past two-and-a-half weeks, so it's important that we continue in that way and we improve on that," he told a pre-match press conference.
"They will want to get better physically and also improve the shape that they want to use, so I expect them to play how they always play: very aggressive and between the lines if they can."
The two sides will meet again at Anfield in the second game of the new Premier League season, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the close proximity of the two fixtures will not play a part.
"We play Crystal Palace on the second matchday - you would not choose this if you had influence on it. Now it happened in the tournament," he also said in his pre-match press conference.
"It's not a big thing between this game and the next game, three-and-a-half weeks or something like this. So that's long enough, it's no problem.
"It doesn't change anything. We need to be focused, we need to try to be as good as possible in this moment, using the circumstances and making the best of it. Probably for both teams it'll be a pretty intense game."
Team news
Alongside Loftus-Cheek, youth prospects Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nya Kirby could also make their first-team debuts for Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
But Connor Wickham, James McArthur, Pape Souare, Lee Chung-Yong and Sullay Kaikai have all stayed in London due to injury and will not feature.
There could be further run-outs for new Liverpool signings Mo Salah and Dominic Solanke who have impressed in their pre-season matches so far.
Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge could also continue their comebacks from injury and feature at the Hong Kong Stadium.
But Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne will miss the tournament entirely due to a muscle strain.
Players not in the Reds' squad include Sadio Mane, Danny Ings, Harry Wilson - who are injured - and Emre Can who is still on his summer break after winning the Confederations Cup with Germany.
