Sergio Aguero and Benjamin Mendy will both be assessed ahead of Manchester City's Champions League opener at home to Lyon on Wednesday (kick-off 8pm).

Striker Aguero suffered an ankle injury during Saturday's 3-0 victory over Fulham while defender Mendy missed the game with a knee problem.

The Premier League champions will be without Pep Guardiola for the visit of Lyon, with the City manager serving a touchline ban at the Etihad Stadium after his sending off in last season's quarter-final against Liverpool.

Guardiola handed the pre-match media duties to Mikel Arteta, who provided an update on the fitness of Aguero and Mendy and City's preparations in Tuesday's press conference.

"We have a training session now and will see how they [Aguero and Mendy] react," the City assistant said.

"For me we have the best players in the world and I look at our players as if they are the best.

"I wouldn't change the players for any others. They are absolutely fantastic. The hunger is this group is incredible."

Arteta will take charge of the team on Wednesday as Guardiola will not be allowed any contact with the players inside the stadium.

The Spaniard added: "Up to now the preparation has been completely normal. The difference tomorrow is we will have some rules you must respect. We can have no communication.

"It is a good challenge, a very nice challenge, but if I had to choose, I would choose Pep on the touchline, because he does that job better than anyone else."

Team news

Along with Aguero and Mendy, full-back Danilo's participation on Wednesday is in doubt.

The Brazil international is yet to feature for City this season after injuring his ankle while on duty as this summer's World Cup.

Long-term Kevin De Bruyne (knee), Claudio Bravo (Achilles) and Eliaquim Mangala (knee) are unavailable.

Opta stats

  • This will be the first competitive encounter between Manchester City and Lyon. So far, no French club has ever won away against City in European competition (D1 L2).
  • Lyon have only won one of their eight Champions League games against English opposition (D4 L3), it was against Liverpool at Anfield in October 2009.
  • This is Manchester City's eighth consecutive Champions League participation - the longest current run among English clubs, reaching the knockout stages in each of their last five campaigns.
  • This is Lyon's 15th Champions League appearance, more than any other French club. They reached the knockout stages of the competition every season from 2003/04 to 2011/12 but haven't managed it ever since, failing to exit the group stages in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Charlie's prediction

Lyon will be getting caught in an awkward situation because they are leaking goals at the moment, while Moussa Dembele went there from Celtic.

Even at the weekend, it was a stroll in the park at 3-0 for City. It seems like Pep has gone 'this isn't good enough' but what he has done is got Leroy Sane back into the team and scoring goals. Raheem Sterling is scoring and Pep is all of a sudden looking at Sergio Aguero asking 'what happened to this superstar start to the season? Gabriel Jesus, where are you these days?' He is asking questions of them.

But when you are asking questions and still looking good, I think it's promising for Man City. I am always unsure what Pep is going to do up front, but I have a feeling he is going to bring in Jesus and I am going for a very convincing victory.

Charlie predicts: 4-0, Gabriel Jesus to score twice (9/1 with Sky Bet)
