Champions League preview: Manchester United v Club Brugge
Tuesday 18 August 2015 19:41, UK
Manchester United return from a one-year hiatus from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday to take on Club Brugge in the first leg of the play-off round.
Having missed out on qualification for the competition for the first time in 19 years in 2014, United must beat the Belgian league runners-up over two legs to reach the 2015/16 group stage.
United have started the campaign promisingly, beating both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa 1-0 and boss Louis van Gaal says his team head into the first-leg at Old Trafford high on confidence.
He told the club's website: "I think when you win two times then you shall have a lot of confidence. But every match is difficult and Belgian teams can play very compactly, they can defend and a team always has a chance of winning.
"Like on [Friday aginst Villa], every team has a chance and if they score out of that chance then it shall be very difficult."
Van Gaal will still be without the services of David de Gea, who will not be considered for the first team until after the transfer deadline, while Phil Jones is suffering from a minor thrombosis and is unavailable.
Adnan Januzaj will be hard to leave out after scoring on Friday night, while Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ander Herrera could be pushing for a start after making a positive impact from the bench against Villa.
United have never lost a Champions League or European Cup qualifying tie; their sole defeat in 16 qualifying games in the competitions was a 1-0 reverse at Zalaegerszeg in the 2002/03 third qualifying round.
Club Brugge have started the season badly and even though I don’t think Man United have played that well they should have enough to win. I’m expecting another cagey one from Louis van Gaal’s side. Even though United haven’t done well they’ve been solid at the back.
