Victor Montano grabbed a late winner for Montpellier in a dramatic and controversial ending to their 2-1 win over Guingamp at Stade de la Mosson.

Claudio Beauvue looked to have rescued a point for the visitors when he cancelled out Souleymane Camara's opener with six minutes to go.

But Montano responded four minutes later before Guingamp goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa was sent off after clashing with referee Philippe Kalt.

Starting the night second from bottom of the table, Jocelyn Gourvennec's men started well and Ronnie Schwartz brought an early save out of home keeper Geoffrey Jourdren.

Schwartz was denied again in the ninth minute while Lorient's best first-half chance was a strong penalty appeal in the 26th minute when Moustapha Diallo appeared to handle in the box.

Montpellier grabbed the lead three minutes after the restart when Camara played a superb one-two with Jonas Martin before prodding the opener over Samassa.

Diallo headed against the bar as Guingamp pressed for an equaliser then Schwartz forced a good save out of Jourdren from a free-kick.

Montpellier had another penalty appeal rejected when Camara tumbled in the box, and Guingamp drew level on 82 minutes when Beauvue converted a cross by Laurent Dos Santos.

But the hosts were back in front in the 86th minute when, after good work from Kevin Berigaud, the ball broke for Montano who bent the winner beyond Samassa.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the final minute when Samassa aggressively confronted referee Kalt, pressing his face towards the official's, before being issued with a straight red card.

Defender Christophe Kerbrat took his place between the posts but there was no further goalmouth action as Samassa's moment of madness overshadowed the match's finale.
