Highlights of the Premier League match between Newcastle and Everton

Everton deservedly claimed their first away league win of the season as Thierno Barry’s second-half goal earned a 1-0 victory at a lacklustre Newcastle, who were booed off at half-time and full-time.

Newcastle's miserable evening deepened in stoppage time as substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off after picking up two bookings in just 86 seconds.

The disappointing Magpies were beaten by Everton for a second time in the space of four days after their 3-1 Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat on Merseyside.

Newcastle's Jacob Ramsey was sent off

Another sorry display from Matthias Jaissle's side was underlined by Barry's 49th-minute winner, which Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe labelled as "truly shocking" defending and "terrible goalkeeping".

Newcastle reacted slowly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's quick free-kick, which released Tyrique George, whose shot somehow squirmed under Lukas Hornicek, allowing Barry to tap home into an empty net.

Toon boss Jaissle, however, believed the goal should have "clearly" been disallowed for a stray elbow from Barry on Fabian Schar in the build-up.

Everton, who were once again without Jack Grealish, should have been ahead earlier in the game as Barry and Harrison Armstrong wasted great first-half chances, with Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher calling Newcastle "poor".

Anthony Elanga came closest to equalising for Newcastle as he hit the post in the 66th minute.

It took the home side until the 85th minute to register their first shot on target through substitute Yoane Wissa, who five minutes later forced a good save from ex-Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Ramsey's 98th-minute red card helped Everton to hold on as they inflicted back-to-back home defeats on Newcastle, who have now lost four of their last five games in all competitions.

But for Everton, their first away league success since victory at St James' Park in February, moves David Moyes' side up to seventh, while Newcastle fall to 13th.

Carra: Boring Newcastle in for a tough season

Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher speaking on Monday Night Football:

"Watching them of late, especially at home, it feels flat and a little bit boring, and that was one thing I didn't think I'd ever be describing Jaissle's Newcastle as.

"You think of the system he's come from, the Red Bull model, how they like to play. At times, those types of teams and managers can leave themselves open at the back, but it's front-footed, it's aggressive, it's getting the crowd involved, and we've just never seen any of that at all tonight [Monday] really. And that's the one where I'm a little bit sort of flummoxed watching it.

"I think it's going to be a tough season for Newcastle. They've got a lot of young players, they've got a young manager in there. The crowd are expecting a lot more."

Jaissle understands boos

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle speaking to Sky Sports on the boos:

"After a performance like that, I can understand that. That's a reality, and I am responsible for that.

"We need to work again and again on the things we need to improve. After today, that's a lot."

On the loss: "We had a different approach. It looked so good during the week; I have to say the lads were committed to what we were doing, and today we can just look back and wonder why we couldn't bring it on the pitch. If you can't deliver when it counts, you don't deserve to win.

"We were not brave enough in possession. Too many long balls.

"It feels at the moment that there's not too much confidence. Not only with the young lads, but also with the more experienced ones. We have to overcome that as a unit. It is expected when you are in transition. Only together can we come out of it."

Jack Grealish was not named in Everton's squad for the game at Newcastle, with the club citing a fitness issue.

The 31-year-old was left out of the team for Thursday's Carabao Cup fourth-round win over the Magpies due to a breach of club discipline after missing training.

Grealish was again left out at St James' Park, with a starting line-up post on the Everton club website stating that he was "not match fit".

Grealish was also absent for the Toffees' 2-0 loss to Arsenal on October 24, but that was put down to illness.

He is on a second consecutive season-long loan from Manchester City and has made six appearances for Everton this season.

During the last campaign, Grealish provided six assists and scored two goals in 20 appearances before suffering a season-ending foot injury in January.
