Newcastle v Man City preview: Newcastle have chance to escape relegation zone
Wednesday 20 April 2016 12:37, UK
Newcastle's battle for Premier League survival continues at home to Manchester City on Tuesday night, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 7pm.
Newcastle's 3-0 win against Swansea on Saturday moved Rafael Benitez's side to just two points behind rivals Sunderland and three points adrift of 17th-placed Norwich.
Manchester City have seen a return to form in April, winning three league games and beating Paris Saint-Germain to progress to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Following their 3-0 Saturday Night Football win over Chelsea, Manuel Pellegrini's side are third in the Premier League table and could create a three-point gap over fourth-placed Arsenal with a win at St James' Park.
Should Sergio Aguero start and score against Newcastle, he'll be the second quickest player to score 100 goals in the Premier League after Alan Shearer (124 apps).
Team News
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and forward Raheem Sterling are back in contention for Pellegrini's side.
Defender Kompany has been out for the past month with the latest in a succession of calf-related problems, while England international Sterling has missed the last five games with a groin injury.
David Silva (ankle) is again missing while forward Samir Nasri, who recently returned from a lengthy lay-off, will rest a minor muscle injury. Full-backs Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna also miss out with back injuries.
Newcastle defenders Fabricio Coloccini and Daryl Janmaat are absent for Rafa Benitez. Coloccini is yet to shake off the calf injury which has sidelined him since February, while Janmaat will sit out with groin and hand problems.
Full-back Kevin Mbabu is close to a return from a long-standing thigh problem, but goalkeepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot (both knee) and defenders Steven Taylor (muscle strain) and Massadio Haidara (knee) are still out.
Opta stats
Newcastle United have won none of the last 18 Premier League meetings against Manchester City (D2 L16), losing the last 12 in a row.
If Man City win they'll equal the record of consecutive Premier League wins against a specific opponent (13 - Manchester United against Wigan Athletic).
City have won seven and lost none of their last eight visits to St James' Park.
Newcastle have scored just one goal in their last six Premier League games against Manchester City, conceding 23 in that time.
Sergio Aguero has scored 10 goals in just eight Premier League appearances against Newcastle United. The Argentina international's tally of 10 goals is the joint-most he has against any opponent in his Premier League career (along with Tottenham).
Aguero has scored 99 Premier League goals in 146 Premier League games - if he scores in this game then he'll be the 2nd quickest to 100 goals in the competition after Alan Shearer (124 apps).
Man City have scored at least two goals in each of their last 15 Premier League games against Newcastle and 11 in the last two meetings.
Pellegrini's next victory will be his 100th as Manchester City manager in all competitions.
Paul Merson's Prediction
It's a crucial game for City in the race for the top-four places so they will be going all out for three points at St James' Park. It's difficult to see past a City victory with Pellegrini's side securing a all three points.
PAUL PREDICTS: 0-2 (Sky Bet odds: 13/2)
Betting
Newcastle are 9/2 shots with Sky Bet to secure back-to-back victories by securing three points in their fight against relegation against Manchester City (3/5).
The Toon remain 1/4 to take the plunge despite Saturday's win against Swansea, while City are 100/1 shots to overhaul Leicester and Tottenham and win the title.
The last three meetings at St James' Park have finished 2-0 to the Citizens and it's 13/2 for a repeat of that outcome. Aguero scored five goals in October's meeting at the Etihad and is 11/1 to score a hat-trick on Tuesday night. See all the match odds and pundit tips here.
