MAN OF THE MATCH
Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp said Tottenham's win was a big result for Mauricio Pochettino and his side...
"They’ve not had a lot of luck in August these last few years
so it was important they got off to a good start. They weren’t at their best
but it was so important just to get the result, especially when you’ve got
players coming back from the World Cup and they are not quite as sharp as you’d
"Mauricio Pochettino will be delighted because it was such a
big three points for them because they can’t always play well, especially at
Newcastle. They were exceptional and Tottenham had to suffer in the second-half
but it was a big three points for them."
Here’s what Dele Alli made of his side’s win at Newcastle…
“It’s very important [to start with a win]. Everyone knows
the first game is a big one. It’s a very long season and we know we’ve got to
improve, but we’ve got off to a good start with a positive result in the end.”
PREMIER LEAGUE TABLE
And here's how the bottom half looks...
Early days I know, but here's how the top half of the Premier League table looks...
NEWCASTLE 1-2 SPURS
It's all over, Spurs pick up an opening day win at Newcastle! Pochettino gambled by picking his strongest team despite some of his World Cup stars only having a few days of training since returning from their holidays. However, it's paid off as goals from Vertonghen and Alli were enough to hand the north London side all three points.
For Newcastle, Joselu grabbed their goal and they had a big chance late on to secure a point but Rondon's shot was deflected onto the crossbar.
90+5: Time is running out for Newcastle as Diame goes long in search of Atsu. The flag goes up for offside against the winger...
90+4: YELLOW! A late caution for Diame, who catches Kane late on the top of the foot.
90+3: Lascelles is quickly closed down by Son, pinning Newcastle deep into their own half.
90+2: Play is back underway and Newcastle will finish this game with 10 men having already made their three substitutions. Yedlin is in no fit state to return.
90: There will be at least FOUR minutes of added time. Play is not yet back underway as Yedlin gingerly leaves the field.
89: Time is running out for the home side as Yedlin fails to keep in a long ball. There's now going to be a delay as Yedlin receives treatment after overstretching attempting to keep the ball in play. It looks a nasty injury!
88: SUB! There's a change of heart from Spurs. Llorente''s been waiting to come on for a while but cramp to Dier has forced Pochettino into changing his mind. Amos is the man to replaced Dier.
87: Now Muto's in space on the left but his low drilled effort is block. Newcastle are pressing here...
85: CROSSBAR! So close to a debut goal for Rondon. Shlevey's pass splits open the Tottenham defence, releasing Rondon. The striker takes a touch before getting a shot away, but the ball deflects off Vertonghen and onto the crossbar.
84: There's no foul as Atsu pinches the ball in midfield. He drives towards the Tottenham penalty area but there's a big mix up between him and Rondon as the ball rolls through to Lloris.
82: Muto's straight into the action, winning a corner for his side...
It comes to nothing though as Lloris punches Shelvey's cross clear.
ALAN SMITH ON THE GANTRY
"Some real glimpses of quality from Dele Alli. A good start to the season for him."
He's being roundly jeered by the Newcastle fans, but he turns to clap the Spurs supporters, with a tiny grin on his face. He could have hit the winner here...
81: SUB! Another change, this time for Newcastle. There's another home debut as Muto replaces Perez.
80: SUB! Alli's afternoon is over. He's replaced by Son.
78: Rondon tries to make the most of Atsu's cross but he cannot get enough power on his shot to trouble Lloris.
76: Shelvey attempts to play in Yedlin but Lloris is quickly off his line to make a crucial interception.
74: Just over 15 minutes remaining at St James' Park. Will we see an equaliser?

71: A first taste of the action for Dembele, who fires over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
69: SUB! A Spurs change this time as Moura is replaced by Dembele.
69: SUB! A change for Newcastle as Ritchie is replaced by Atsu. It's fair to say Ritchie is not happy with that change, showing his frustration on the bench.
He chucks his bottle to the floor... he's fuming!
68: YELLOW! Frustration for Kane! The England captain's poor pass is cut out by Kenedy and he reacts by hauling the Brazilian to the floor.
NEWCASTLE FANS PROTEST
Earlier today, Newcastle fans gathered in their hundreds outside one of owner Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct city centre stores in protest at his stewardship of the club.
Plenty of work to do for Poch's side to ensure a positive start to the Premier League season...
66: It looks like Pochettino is not going to take any chances with Dier.
Spurs are preparing Dembele to come on...
65: Dier catches Perez late and straight away the Newcastle fans are calling for a second yellow card for the England man. Luckily for Spurs, referee Atkinson leaves his cards in his pocket.
64: The hosts are increasing the pressure on Spurs at the moment. Shelvey's flick releases Dummett but the full-back's cross is cleared by Sanchez.
62: Rondon's straight into the action. His low cross in search of Perez is cleared only as far as Kenedy, who curls an effort high over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.
61: SAVE! Perez gets a shot away from a tight angle but Lloris is alert to the danger, getting down low to his left to make a superb stop.
60: SUB! That's Joselu's last action as he's replaced by Rondon for his Newcastle debut. And what a reception Newcastle's new No. 9 gets from the St James' Park faithful.
59: Ritchie plays a beautiful pass over the top in search of Joselu. The striker cannot get away from Sanchez though, who diverts the ball behind for a Newcastle corner...
58: Another chance for Spurs! Dubravka palms Aurier's cross only as far as Sanchez at the far post. The centre-back attempts a spectacular acrobatic effort but he cannot hit the target.
56: WHAT A SAVE! Davies fires a low cross into the box and the ball is turned goalwards from close range by Sissoko, who is denied by the outstretched palm of Dubravka.
The Slovakian showed excellent reactions to keep that one out!
54: Moura's sharp turn wins Spurs a bit of time. Yedlin brings down the Brazilian handing Spurs a free-kick just inside their own half.
"Kenedy has a rush of blood. He has too long to think about it, and loses his composure with the first touch. After that, the chance is gone! Such a disappointment, a golden opportunity."
52: CHANCE! Two brilliant chances in the space of a minute! Newcastle should be level...
Joselu's superb pass picks out Kenedy in acres of space in the Spurs penalty area. However, Kenedy's poor touch sees the chance disappear.
51: CHANCE! Kane takes an air swing at Eriksen's cross but the ball does fall for Alli at the far post. It just hits the England midfielder's knee and loops up and into the grateful hands of Dubravka.
48: POST! Spurs switch off early in the second-half as Shlevey hooks the ball into the path of Diame. The midfielder unleashes a fierce drive which smacks against the upright and, luckily for Spurs, away from goal.
Alan Smith on the gantry: "What a strike. But a real lack of concentration from the Spurs defenders to allow him in."
46: Newcastle get us back underway at St James' Park...
Tottenham to win 4-1 can be backed at 10/1, Harry Kane to score the game's fourth goal is 9/2 while you can back Jonjo Shelvey to be carded at 5/1...
