New Dundee United signing Eiji Kawashima is set to go straight into the squad for the derby against Dundee on Saturday.

After receiving international clearance, head coach Mixu Paatelainen confirmed the Japan international will be part of his plans for the game, which is live on Sky Sports 1.

"All clearance is through and he will be part of the squad," Paatelainen told ArabZONE.co.uk. "He has trained with a team in Japan in the last few weeks and doing hard work with a goalkeeping coach but he hasn't played in a match for quite a while.

"I am delighted that he is now here and can start working with his team-mates.

"He will challenge for a starting place immediately, once I speak to Eiji and find out his feelings on the matter. With his knowledge and experience he will know himself whether he is ready, whether the journey has had any impact etcetera.

"It is important that the player is comfortable. Then after I have seen him in training I will make my decision."

Kawashima had to sit an English exam before being given international clearance.

He said: "Dundee United now have a young team and they are expecting more experience in the squad. I think I can bring my experience to the squad but also I want to show my fighting spirit."
