Dundee United midfielder John Rankin reckons some players may have to assess their performances after the 3-0 reverse to Motherwell on Tuesday.
Rankin believes some of his team-mates may have given the game up too easily, but he insists the overall attitude at Tannadice is not a problem as United's battle for Scottish Premiership survival is running out of time.
The defeat to Motherwell leaves United 13 points adrift at the foot of the table with only 13 matches remaining.
Rankin said: "I think with calibre of player in the dressing room we expect results to be better, and they have to be better. It's not good enough. It is not good enough, no matter what way you look at it.
"But what we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and question, is everyone giving 100 per cent?
"And there will be certain individuals who look in the mirror and probably say, no they aren't, and why that's the case I don't know.
"There will be players in there who wholly admit things aren't going their own way, and when it is that way they'll down tools. That is just human nature.
"We need strength of character at this moment in time, people that's going to stand up and fight.
"I don't think anybody will throw in the towel. If someone does throw in the towel I'll question their professionalism, because it's not right."
But Rankin reckons club chairman Steven Thompson was right to criticise the team after the defeat
Thompson described United's performance against Motherwell as "abysmal" and apologised to the club's supporters.
"The chairman's entitled to his opinion, he owns the club, it his prerogative to say what he wants, and he's done that," Rankin said.
