Belgian midfielder heads home

Rangers have allowed midfielder Thomas Buffel to join Belgian side Cercle Brugge on a free transfer. The midfielder still had a year to run on his current deal at Ibrox but has reached an agreement with the club which suits both parties. He had joined the Gers for £2.3million in the January 2005, with then manager Alex McLeish fending off interest from Stuttgart, Schalke, Benfica and Anderlecht to secure his signature. He helped Rangers secure the SPL title and the CIS Insurance Cup during his debut season in Glasgow, but struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot once McLeish left the club. A knee operation in July 2007 saw his involvement restricted even further and it was decided that he was better served searching for a new club. At 27-years-old he should still have plenty of football in him and will be hoping to rejuvenate his career back in his homeland.
