Fulham keeper needs second wrist operation

Fulham goalkeeper Antti Niemi is set to miss the start of the season after learning he needs a second wrist operation. Niemi has recently returned to training with the Cottagers after being ruled out for three weeks following surgery on his wrist. However, the Finn has experienced discomfort in the joint and will have another bout of surgery next week. "I'm extremely disappointed that having returned to training, I now have to undergo further surgery," Niemi told the club's official website. "However, I'm confident that I can recover from this setback sooner rather than later. "I was looking forward to joining the new players who have been added to the squad, but I will now focus on my rehabilitation after surgery and look forward to returning as soon as possible." Niemi is due to battle with new signing Mark Schwarzer for the right to be Roy Hodgson's first choice at Craven Cottage this season.
