Peter Sweeney is expecting to join Grimsby, who are also chasing Chester defender Paul Linwood.

Midfielder to hold talks with Newell following release by Leeds

Peter Sweeney says there is a 'very high percentage' he will sign for Grimsby Town, who are also chasing Chester City defender Paul Linwood. Scottish midfielder Sweeney is available on a free transfer after his contract with Leeds United was cancelled by mutual consent on Wednesday. He finished last season on loan at Grimsby and has confirmed he is looking to secure a permanent return to Blundell Park. "There's a very high percentage I will be a Grimsby player soon - it's a case of when, not if, for me," Blundell told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph. "I have spoken to Mike Newell a few times and while there have been other clubs interested, he's the only manager I've talked to. "As far as I'm concerned, Grimsby is the No.1 choice." Mariners boss Mike Newell is also hoping to sign Linwood, who has a year left on his contract at Chester, but is reported to have been told he can leave the club. Newell said: "He is one of the players we have looked at - one of several in truth. "We'll see if anything can be done there - it may depend on his situation at Chester."
