Newell continues quest to bring in a striker

Grimsby Town have handed a trial to Graham Barrett as Mike Newell continues his search for a new striker. Republic of Ireland forward Barrett is a free agent after leaving St Johnstone and will train with the Mariners until next Monday. The former Coventry and Falkirk attacker joins Chris Jones and Andy Smith in trying to earn a contract at Blundell Park. Meanwhile, Newell has revealed he has been impressed by Smith's initial impact in training after his arrival from Northern Ireland. Newell told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph: "We are having a look at Andy and he did well from the brief training session we had. "He is another who was recommended to me by an old team-mate. He's lost his way a bit in the last few years, but he looks fit, so we'll see how he does on trial."
