Greek striker leaves Ligue 1 strugglers

Angelos Charisteas has left Ligue 1 strugglers Arles after seeing his contract cancelled by mutual consent. The Greece international only joined the French minnows over the summer, signing on a free from Nuremberg. He hoped a change of scenery would bring about a reversal in fortune following a frustrating couple of years in Germany. Unfortunately Arles' first taste of life in the French top flight has been an unmitigated disaster, with just one win taken from 14 matches so far.

Frustration

Charisteas has failed to make any impression during that torrid opening to the season, leading to frustration all round. It has now been decided that the 30-year-old, who helped Greece to European Championship glory in 2004, is free to leave the club. He has reached an agreement with Arles for the termination of his contract, which was due to run until the end of the 2010/11 campaign. Charisteas' fellow countryman Angelos Basinas, who joined Arles at the same time, left the club in similar circumstances on 22nd October.
