Pompey boss opts against handing defender terms

Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has opted against following up his interest in trialist Shavar Thomas. The Jamaica captain spent the past week with the club and featured in their 2-2 draw against a Charleston XI. Cotterill thought the 30-year-old defender did well at the back, but ultimately felt he would not add enough value to the squad. With the new Championship season now less than two weeks away, Cotterill has made an early decision on his future.

Decision

"Shavar has gone back," Cotterill told The News. "He did well in the game the other night, but I don't think he would be anything better than what we already have at the football club. "It was best that decision was made sooner rather than later. "He's a really nice lad but we've got some nice lads and good players as it is. "We didn't want another in there if he wasn't better than what we already have."
