Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has returned to training with the rest of the squad as he continues his recovery from injury.

City have released images of the 29-year-old using training facilities accompanied with a positive update on his fitness on their website.

"Vincent Kompany's given the City squad a welcome boost by returning to first-team training following a six-week lay-off," a statement on the website read.

"The skipper's been working hard to return to fitness since his last outing against Sunderland on Boxing Day, and Blues fans everywhere will be delighted to see him back in action alongside his team-mates at the City Football Academy.

Kompany has been hampered by calf problems this season and has not featured since an abortive comeback attempt against Sunderland.

The influential defender managed just nine minutes in that 4-1 Premier League victory at the Etihad Stadium - his only action in City's last 19 matches.
