Jack Wilshere has issued an apology to Arsenal supporters after they slipped to their fourth successive defeat away to Brighton on Sunday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his second Arsenal goal since moving from Borussia Dortmund in January, but strikes from Lewis Dunk and Glenn Murray were enough for Brighton to record a famous win over the three-time Premier League champions.

The result means Arsenal have won only four of their past 15 matches in all competitions, and it prompted Wilshere - who played the full 90 minutes at the Amex Stadium - to apologise.

He tweeted: "I'm sorry to the Gooners out there. You deserve better. That's all I have to say.

"I know it's difficult at the moment in this difficult period we are going through as a team but we need you. We will do better but please stick with us."

His response followed a similar tweet from Petr Cech, who was at fault for both of Brighton's goals.

He tweeted: "If you want to win a game away from home in the best league in the world your GK can't concede 2 goals like I did today...it's simply not possible...the team fought back but the damage was done."

Arsenal are now 13 points behind the top four, meaning their only realistic hope of qualifying for next season's Champions League is by winning the Europa League.

They travel to AC Milan on Thursday in the first leg of their last-16 tie to take on Gennaro Gattuso's resurgent side, who are unbeaten in 2018.
