Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed veteran defender John O'Shea will captain his country in his final international appearance against the USA.

O'Neill named a 40-man provisional squad for the friendly games against Celtic on May 20, a testimonial for Bhoys captain Scott Brown, before a trip to Paris against France on May 28 and the fixture with the USA in Dublin on June 2.

Sunderland defender O'Shea, 37, has won 117 caps is joined in an expanded squad by Shamrock Rovers striker Graham Burke, while Peterborough goalkeeper Conor O'Malley, Millwall midfielder Shaun Williams and Preston forward Callum Robinson also receive first senior call-ups.

The three friendly games act as the final preparation ahead of the UEFA Nations League opener away to Wales on September 6.

O'Neill has also made space in his squad for Matt Doherty (Wolves), Declan Rice (West Ham) and Scott Hogan (Aston Villa) who made their debuts in the recent friendly against Turkey.

Burke is the latest player from the League of Ireland to be called up to the squad, following on from the previous call ups for the Dundalk trio of Andy Boyle, Daryl Horgan and Gary Rogers.
