Marco Silva frustrated as Everton's Carabao Cup campaign ended

Mark Hughes said Southampton deserved to beat Everton and their fate felt in their own hands during their penalty shoot-out win.
Hughes' side were denied a Carabao Cup third-round win in normal time as Theo Walcott cancelled out Danny Ings' first-half strike with five minutes to go, but they triumphed in the resulting shoot-out as Cedric scored the winning spot-kick to send them through.
Everton had controlled possession at Goodison Park, but it was Southampton who had the better of the chances with Charlie Austin thwarted by Maarten Stekelenburg.
"We're pleased," he said. "We would've been really disappointed if we hadn't gone through the tie, in my view. I thought we were the better team on the night, with the way we played and how progressive we were in our play.
"I thought we had good moments as well to score more goals than we actually did, and we always had a sense we were in control of our own fate."
Marco Silva was left frustrated as another chance to end Everton's 24-year wait for a major trophy came and went, and was especially unhappy by the lottery of penalties sending them out of the competition.
"Of course [I am not happy]," he said. "We had a goal before the match, before the start of the competition, I was clear it was an important competition for us. And we didn't achieve the result through penalty kicks."
