Thierry Henry is now the favourite to succeed Steve Bruce as manager of Aston Villa, Sky Sports News understands.

Villa bosses, however, do retain an interest in the possibility of Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers taking over.

Rodgers cools Villa interest

If either man takes over at Villa Park, former club defender John Terry is being lined up as a possible assistant manager or first-team coach.

An initial shortlist of five names has now been whittled down, with Henry and Rodgers being the two left remaining.

Henry has already held talks with Villa's hierarchy, and those meetings have been described as "very positive".

But the Championship club have been mindful not to make any formal approach to Celtic, as they had midweek European duty against Salzburg, and now prepare for a game against St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon.

Currently, it remains unclear whether former Liverpool boss Rodgers would be interested in a move to England's second tier.

It is understood Henry is now the prime candidate for the role, and could take over at Villa Park within a week should negotiations progress well.
