Who is out of contract this summer? Vincent Kompany and the best free agents from Europe's top leagues

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is out of contract this summer

Manchester City celebrate

Who is out of contract this summer? We have scoured Europe to create the ultimate out-of-contract XI from the Premier League, Championship, Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and La Liga.

According to transfermarkt.co.uk data, 857 players across the six leagues have deals that will expire this summer and we have whittled that list down to a starting XI.

Goalkeeper

Willy Caballero

Six stoppers made our shortlist, but Chelsea reserve keeper Willy Caballero narrowly claimed his starting place between the sticks - having a wealth of top-flight experience in England.

Paris Saint-Germain veteran Gianluigi Buffon is the headline stopper available on a free, but at 41 years old, the former Italy international could well hang up his gloves after winning the Ligue 1 title this season.

Just missed out: Buffon, Heurelho Gomes, Artur Boruc, Adrian and Michel Vorm

Defence

A raft of top-class defenders are up for grabs this summer, including the likes of Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Christian Fuchs, Antonio Valencia and Diego Godin - but none of them makes the XI.

Despite reports suggesting a contract had been agreed verbally, Chelsea centre-back David Luiz appears to be out of contract in July this year and is the first name on our teamsheet.

The Brazilian partners Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, whose current deal expires this summer.

He may have just scored one of, if not the, goal of his career, but a non-committal Pep Guardiola raised doubts over the Belgium international's long-term future at City following their 1-0 win over Leicester on Monday.

PSG veteran Dani Alves is our right-back and partners Liverpool workhorse James Milner as a makeshift left-back.

Ander Herrera

Manchester United duo Ander Herrera and Juan Mata have been linked with Barcelona and are uncontested starters in our XI.

Meanwhile, Adrien Rabiot has now been at Paris Saint-Germain for six years but has fallen out of favour at the club, with a raft of English clubs reportedly in the hunt to snap up the 24-year-old on a free.

Bayern Munich duo Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are the headline wingers up for grabs in July, but at 35 and 36 years old, respectively, we've benched them to use as explosive substitutes.

Still only 29, Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck earns a starting place to inject pace down the left flank - although his injury-plagued, five-year spell at Arsenal could be a concern.

Just missed out: Santi Cazorla, Robben, Ribery, Ryan Babel

Attack

Daniel Sturridge

Chelsea have an option to extend Olivier Giroud's stay, while injury-plagued Andy Carroll, Tottenham's Fernando Llorente and Burnley's 38-year-old veteran Peter Crouch are free agents - but, again, none makes our XI.

Daniel Sturridge has suffered his own injury woes at Liverpool, but the England striker's class is unquestionable and is our first-choice pick up top.

The final starting place goes to Marseille's Mario Balotelli, having joined Manchester City and Liverpool for big bucks earlier in his career before Jurgen Klopp released the Italy international nearly three years ago.

Just missed out: Carroll, Llorente and Crouch
