Retired two-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Mia Hamm has been nominated to the board of directors of Serie A side Roma.

The nomination was made at a club shareholder meeting on Monday. Board members serve three-year terms and Roma have confirmed Hamm is not an investor in the club.

Former USA international striker Hamm is a two-time Women’s World Cup winner and still holds the record for the most number of assists for her country.

Hamm retired in 2004 after scoring 158 international goals - a record across both the men’s and women’s game until compatriot Abby Wambach surpassed that figure last year.

The 42-year-old recently admitted to being a big Roma fan, naming club legend Francesco Totti as her favourite current footballer.

Last year, Hamm became the first woman to be inducted into the World Football Hall of Fame, where she joined the likes of Pele, Eusebio, Alfredo Di Stefano and Franz Beckenbauer.
