We profile the lesser-known Premier League signings on Deadline Day
Wednesday 2 September 2015 12:07, UK
Anthony Martial, David de Gea and Saido Berahino were the high-profile names that dominated Deadline Day in the Premier League.
But away from the biggest stories of the day, there were a number of new signings that flew under the radar.
From Everton's Ramiro Funes Mori to Watford's Obbi Oulare, we give you the lowdown on some of the less-talked-about new arrivals.
Virgil van Dijk - Celtic to Southampton
Southampton's £11.5m move for Dutch centre-back Van Dijk was the second-biggest deal of Deadline Day after Anthony Martial's £36m switch to Manchester United. The 24-year-old had been linked with a host of Premier League sides, having impressed in Scotland since joining Celtic from Groningen in 2013. Van Dijk is 6ft 4in, good in the air and technically accomplished, and Southampton say they had been tracking him for some time. As well as being defensively strong, Van Dijk has an eye for goal - he scored 15 in two full seasons at Celtic.
Ramiro Funes Mori - River Plate to Everton
Having allowed Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz to leave this summer, Everton finally brought in defensive cover in the shape of Funes Mori. The 24-year-old is a left-footed centre-back who is strong in the air and good on the floor, and he won his first Argentina cap in March having impressed at River Plate. Everton eventually paid £9.5m to clinch the deal before the deadline, and you can read more about him in our 'Who is Ramiro Funes Mori?' feature.
Papy Djilobodji - Nantes to Chelsea
Chelsea's surprise move for Djilobodji came after they were frustrated in their efforts to sign John Stones and Marquinhos. The 26-year-old is a Senegal international centre-back, who is also capable of playing in defensive midfield, and he was a cut-price option at just £2.7m. Djilobodji is a combative and powerful left-footer who became a key player for Nantes in Ligue 1. For more information about him, don't miss our 'Who is Papy Djilobodji?' feature.
Michael Hector - Reading to Chelsea
Hector's £4m move to Chelsea was another Deadline Day surprise from the Premier League champions. The 23-year-old centre-back will remain at Reading on loan this season before joining up with his new club next summer. Hector is an athletic centre-back who represented Jamaica at the Copa America. He has been on Reading's books since 2009, but had a number of non-league loan spells before becoming a regular at the Madejski Stadium last season.
Obbi Oulare - Club Brugge to Watford
Watford paid an estimated £6m to bolster their strike force with the signing of Belgium Under-21 international Oulare. The 19-year-old scored nine goals in 39 starts for Club Brugge having come through the youth ranks at French side Lille. He arrives at Watford as something of an unknown quantity, but he is said to model his game on Christian Benteke, and he did make a substitute appearance in Brugge's recent Champions League play-off clash against Manchester United.
Matija Sarkic - Anderlecht to Aston Villa
Teenage goalkeeper Sarkic is one for the future, and is therefore unlikely to see much first-team action at Villa this season. He has potential, though. The 18-year-old came to Villa's attention while playing for Anderlecht's U19s, and he has recently been promoted to Serbia's U21 squad. He joins Brad Guzan, Mark Bunn and Jed Steer as the goalkeepers in Tim Sherwood's squad.
Victor Ibarbo - Cagliari to Watford
Ibarbo was one of three new arrivals at Watford on Deadline Day. The Colombia international joined from Cagliari having spent the second half of last season on loan at Serie A runners-up Roma. Ibarbo is a powerful and pacey forward who can play anywhere across the front line. He has 15 international caps, and made three appearances on Colombia's run to the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
