Luke Shaw has committed his future to Manchester United by signing a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old was set to become a free agent next summer but the defender has now penned a deal which will see him remain with United.

After signing his deal, Shaw said: "Since I came to United it's been a whirlwind four years. I am very proud to sign my new contract and continue my stay at this great club.

"I want to thank everybody that has stood by me and shown me huge support - the management, my team-mates and the fans. I want to let everyone know that I will give everything I have to repay them and deliver success over the years to come.

"I'm still very young with a lot more to learn and I can't wait to continue my progress under Jose Mourinho."

Mourinho himself paid tribute to Shaw, who has established himself at United's first-choice left-back this season.

He said: "Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level and he always believes in himself which is a great attribute to have.

Sky sources understand Manchester United have also held discussions with goalkeeper David de Gea and Anthony Martial, who have options of a further year that could be triggered on their current deals.

Meanwhile, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young will have their form and reliability assessed further into the campaign before decisions are made on whether to hold talks about extending their contracts.
