Ole Gunnar Soskjaer says Marcus Rashford is looking more assured and confident in front of goal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer heaped praise on Marcus Rashford after he hit his fourth goal in four games in Manchester United's 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.

Solskjaer's United won for the seventh straight game since the sacking of Jose Mourinho, and Rashford was the star of the show at Old Trafford, with the caretaker manager describing him as "top class".

Solskjaer says Rashford has improved both mentally and technically in recent weeks, as well as providing energy for the team as they look to slip into the top four after a poor first half to the season.

He told Sky Sports: "He has been top class. You start with work rate. He has that, works like no one else, runs channels, holds the ball up.

"He has now calmed down in front of goal and he's very assured and is practising all the time. His technique and also his mind-set. He's dropped his shoulder and he's not playing confident. Now he's confident.

Highlights from Manchester United's 2-1 win over Brighton in the Premier League

"I thought we played some fantastic stuff at times, some great goals, the switch of play before the first goal was brilliant, and the second goal from Marcus was brilliant, it shows the quality of the boy.

"The start of the second half I think we should have maybe played the game out better than we did as the last 15 minutes we were under the cosh."

Goals from Paul Pogba and Rashford mean United are now in with a realistic chance of making the top four, a feat which looked impossible in the final weeks of Mourinho's tenure.

Club legend Solskjaer admits this experience is one he will remember forever, whether he gets the full-time job or not, but still insists there are areas United can improve on.

"I can't complain can I? I am just smiling and this is one of these things I will remember for the rest of my life. It's just been a month, it's been a rollercoaster and it's class to be here.

"I don't think you can ever get calm at Old Trafford or Manchester United because you always look for the improvement, to get better, and we know that we can play better than we did today.

"Some great stuff at times, but we have things to improve on, especially when we get under the cosh like we did today, or against Tottenham, and we need to play out the game better, with the ball and with a better shape."
