PAUL JONES SCOOPS TOP WELSH AWARD

THE WELSH football awards were presented last night and Southampton keeper Paul Jones scooped the top award of Welsh player of the year.

Jones beat off stiff competition from Manchester United flyer Ryan Giggs. The 32-year old stopper has been an ever present in Wales` unsuccessful Euro 2000 qualification attempt, performing with distinction on many occasions.

Jones was delighted to receive the accolade: "Considering the competition I am delighted to have won."

Aston Villa youngster Mark Delaney was presented with the less prestigious Welsh club player of the year award after his ten month rise to fame from Carmarthen to Aston Villa via Cardiff City.
