VAN NISTELROOY WINS TOP PLAYER AWARD

MANCHESTER UNITED target Ruud van Nistelrooy has been voted Dutch KPN-Eredivisie Player of the Year for the second year running by his fellow professionals.

The award PSV Eindhoven striker, who ended the last campaign as the league's top goalscorer with 29 goals despite missing a large chunk at the end of the campaign with a serious knee injury, won the award for the 1999-2000 season

The injury scuppered a potential British record £18.5 million move to Old Trafford in March but United are still believed to be interested in taking the highly rated hit-man to the club.

The 24-year-old Dutch international returned to light training this month after a nine month lay-off and he is hopeful of making a return to action by the end of the season.

Van Nistelrooy's former team-mate at PSV Luc Nilis, who was forced to retire from football last week after failing to recover from a broken leg he sustained with Aston Villa, came second and former Vitesse Arnhem striker Pierre van Hooijdonk now playing with Benfica was third.

PSV's highly rated midfielder Arnold Bruggink was named emerging talent of the year and Feyenoord's Polish goalkeeper Jurek Dudek won the accolade for the best goalkeeper in the KPN Telecompetitie.

Hereenveen won team of the year and coach Foppe de Haan won the best trainer award.

Republic of Ireland international forward David Connolly picked up the award for Totodivisie Player of the year for his performances while on loan from Feyenoord to Excelsior.
