Liverpool are interested in signing Schalke centre-back Joel Matip in the January transfer window, according to Sky sources.

Matip is out of contract at the end of the season but the Bundesliga side are desperate for him to sign a new deal.

The 6' 4" German-born Cameroon international fits the bill for Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp, who has had injury problems in his defence all season.

Martin Skrtel is sidelined with a hamstring injury and is not expected back until the beginning of February while Joe Gomez, who started the season well for the Reds, is out for the remainder of the campaign.

But if Klopp does want to pursue Matip, he may have a battle on his hands.
