Everton have made an initial approach to Roma for their Greece international centre-back Kostas Manolas, according to Sky in Italy.
Toffees boss Ronald Koeman is keen to strengthen in defence this month and the 25-year-old is considered one of the best centre-backs in Europe.
Manolas has played over 100 times for Roma since a £10.8m move from Olympiakos in 2014 and has made 18 appearances this season.
Manolas has also impressed in 27 caps for Greece since his debut in 2013 - most notably at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
A string of imperious displays helped carry Greece into the knockout stages for the first time in their history, and it prompted Roma to buy the player at the age of 23.
Manolas began his senior career at Thrasyvoulos, where he broke through from the academy, before three years with AEK Athens preceded a move to Olympiakos in 2012.
