Rafael Benitez is set to restore striker Dwight Gayle to Newcastle's starting line-up when they face Wigan at St James's Park.

Benitez rested Gayle for the 1-1 draw at Birmingham before the international break, which extended the Magpies' winless streak to three games.

Jonjo Shelvey is also set to make a timely return in midfield after he missed the game at St Andrew's due to illness.

Paul Dummett and Grant Hanley are expected to be fit despite withdrawing from international duty with Wales and Scotland respectively.

Wigan will be missing Andy Kellett when they visit the north east.

The full-back was forced off against Aston Villa before the international break with a knee ligament injury that will rule him out for the rest of the campaign.

Will Grigg may not play again this term with a knee problem himself and captain Stephen Warnock is also nursing a knee injury.
