Dwight Gayle scored twice as Newcastle warmed up for the season with a 2-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

Gayle netted the winner from Jonjo Shelvey's corner after Jamie Walker had cancelled out the Newcastle forward's fifth-minute opener.

Esmael Gonçalves ballooned a penalty over the bar for Hearts as Rafa Benitez's side kicked-off their pre-season with a win in front of 10,000 fans in Edinburgh.

Rolando Aarons gave the hosts a scare after barely a minute by crashing a shot against the bar off his right foot, before a fine ball from Siem de Jong released Gayle who slipped the ball past Hearts goalkeeper Jack Hamilton.

The hosts blew the chance to level the game when Newcastle defender Massadio Haïdara was adjudged to have handled in the box and Goncalves stepped up and thrashed the resulting penalty over the top.

Hearts were level within seconds, however, when Walker found space in the box to tuck home a loose ball as the Newcastle defence dithered.

Hamilton saved well from a De Jong header after a neat corner from Shelvey, but Newcastle were back ahead minutes later when the former Swansea midfielder's pass dropped for Gayle to scramble the ball past Walker.

Goncalves nearly made amends for his penalty miss when his fizzing strike smacked against the foot of Rob Elliot's post, before Walker went close to grabbing his second only to be denied by the Newcastle 'keeper.

Aleksandar Mitrovic had the Magpies' best chances of the second half. He almost took advantage of Hamilton's fumble to extend his side's lead and headed over from a fine cross by Jesus Gamez.
