Fulham are in talks with Newcastle to sign striker Dwight Gayle, Sky Sports News understands.
Sources at Newcastle have claimed the Sky Bet Championship side have made a £15m bid for the 27-year-old.
But sources at Fulham have denied they have made such an offer.
Sky Sports News has also been told that Newcastle are looking for a fee of closer to £20m and will only sell Gayle if they can find a replacement before the transfer deadline in less than 48 hours' time.
Gayle scored 23 Championship goals in 34 appearances as Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League last season.
He has emerged as a target for Fulham despite the club already signing two new strikers in Rui Fonte - an expensive acquisition from Benfica - and Aboubakar Kamara from Amiens.
Whites boss Slavisa Jokanovic has been at odds with the Fulham hierarchy over transfers again this summer. The club sold Sone Aluko to Reading for £7.5m on Tuesday - a deal Jokanovic previously said would be a "mistake".
