Wigan have secured the services of former Everton and Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson on a short-term contract.
The 30-year-old left Sunderland by mutual consent in March, two weeks after being charged with drink-driving following a car crash.
The Sky Bet League One club had already suspended Gibson with immediate effect following his charge for driving with excess alcohol on March 17.
After securing his deal with the Championship side on Friday, Gibson said: "I am thankful for the opportunity to play for Wigan and I am determined to repay the manager, chairman and the fans for this chance.
"I have got myself in good condition and can't wait to get back to playing regular football. Training has been at a really good standard throughout pre-season and ultra-competitive.

"I have played in the Championship and know what a tough league it is but I sense a really hungry squad here, determined to do well for the manager and the fans."
Gibson has played nearly 100 Premier League games during his time with Manchester United, Everton and Sunderland. He has also won 27 caps with the Republic of Ireland.
Wigan boss Paul Cook added: "Darron is a talented footballer, who has played at the highest level and is a good addition to our squad."
