West Ham are close to agreeing a deal with Celta Vigo that would see striker Maxi Gomez arrive in the summer, Sky Sports News understands.
West Ham are hopeful of capturing Gomez's signature although the Uruguay international will remain at Celta Vigo for the rest of the season.
The compromise means West Ham are expected to pay less than Gomez's stipulated £43.3m release clause. It is thought the fee West Ham will pay the La Liga side will be closer to the £40m mark.
Gomez has been something of a revelation since moving to Celta Vigo from his homeland in 2017. He scored 19 La Liga goals in his first season in Spain and has notched nine so far this term.
West Ham's interest in the 22-year-old dates back to last year but they now seem keen to conclude a deal before the transfer window slams shut, with Gomez moving to London in the summer.
