Birmingham are planning to appeal the red card shown to midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld in Tuesday night's ill-tempered draw at Brentford.

It is understood the Championship club are studying video footage to try to corroborate their claim that Kieftenbeld did nothing wrong following his clash with Brentford's Neal Maupay in the second half.

Sky Sports' match pictures are inconclusive.

Blues boss Garry Monk said: "We have to appeal it. You can't see something you know was the wrong decision and not appeal it.

"It was 100 per cent the wrong decision. It happened right in front of me. I actually thought the Brentford player would get booked for feigning an injury.

"There was a coming together but nothing that warranted his reaction. To see the red card was a complete shock. Obviously, that is where we felt aggrieved."

Monk is likely to escape a touchline ban after he was also sent off by referee Tim Robinson.

Football Association guidelines state that for a first offence, if the manager accepts the charge levied, he will be fined and warned about his future conduct.

Monk added: "I don't want to talk about my sending off. I spoke to the ref and he made his decision.

"Twenty-three years in football I don't get everything right, but I know something when I see it. We had to deal with it and we did it well."

Ten-man Birmingham clung on for a hard-earned point in the 1-1 draw at Griffin Park.

Michael Morrison's glancing near-post header gave City the lead after 26 minutes, but Josh McEachran's first senior goal, a free-kick from a tight angle, secured the draw.
