Manolo Gabbiadini has completed his move from Southampton to Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old joined the Saints from Napoli for £14.6m in June 2017 but has been less than prolific, scoring just 12 goals in 60 appearances.
Just one of those goals has come this season, with Gabbiadini opening the scoring for Saints in their 1-1 draw at home to Watford on November 10.
He has made just one appearance, as a substitute, since Ralph Hasenhuttl took over as manager.
That led to talk of a move away from St Mary's, with AC Milan, Fiorentina and Real Betis also believed to have been in the running for Gabbiadini.
But he has opted instead for a return to Sampdoria, where he played between July 2013 and January 2015.
"Southampton Football Club can confirm that Manolo Gabbiadini has completed a permanent move to Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee," the club said in a statement.
"Everyone at the club would like to thank Manolo for his efforts during his time at St Mary's and wish him the very best for the future."
