Barry Bannan: Sheffield Wednesday should be aiming higher
Tuesday 4 April 2017 20:32, UK
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has admitted he's not happy with where the club are in the league, and insists that the Owls should be aiming for at least the top two in the Sky Bet Championship.
Bannan and Co dropped out of the play-off places at the weekend, and face Rotherham live on Sky Sports 1 on Tuesday night with the hopes of climbing back into the top six.
And in an interview with EFL pundit David Prutton for Sky Bet, Bannan outlined his desire to reach the Premier League with Wednesday, and says it's up to the players to get them there.
"As players we aren't happy with where we are in the league," said Bannan. "We were a surprise last year and no one expected it, so that was a good season for us.
"But we've got six strikers who are up there with the best six in the league, and I think this season with the players we've brought in and the strength we've got as a squad we should be doing better than we have.
"It's a tough league, you can see that with the results week in week out. You see Newcastle getting beaten even though they've got a big squad. We feel as a team we're better than where we are, but there's still seven games to go and we've got to see if we can finish as high as we can.
"There are going to be ups and downs, but there are still a lot of points to play for. If we can play to the way we know we can, as a squad I have no doubt we'll be in the play-offs.
"This is a club that should be in the Premier League. Everything is there: fans, the stadium is brilliant, the training ground is getting a lot better and the chairman is trying everything he can to make this a Premier League club. So it's up to us to get this club there, and if we can't do that this year it'll be a huge disappointment."
Bannan has had arguably his best spell as a player since arriving at Hillsborough in 2015, saying the consistency of regular matches has allowed him to produce his best on the pitch.
"I've got to the point where I'm playing week in, week out and there's no excuses anymore," he said. "I've got a manager who shows great confidence in me, and I'm old and experienced enough to know what's needed in this league.
"I love this club and since I've come here it's the best time I've had in football."
