As reported earlier, Juventus have been monitoring Milan's deal for Mateta.
Another move by Juve to take the player on loan with an option to buy cannot yet be ruled out before Monday's deadline.
However, Milan's U-turn is not expected to have an impact on Jorgen Strand Larsen's move to Palace as things stand.
As far as Strand Larsen and Wolves are concerned, the deal is proceeding as planned.
The Norway international completed his Palace medical on Monday ahead of a £48m move from Wolves.
And contracts have been being finalised on Monday afternoon for the striker.
'Until the deals are signed, there'll be nerves in south London, Wolverhampton and Southampton'
Analysis by Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett:
Like any housing chain, the concern now is that a number of deals may collapse on the back of Jean Phillipe Mateta's failed move to AC Milan.
At the moment, our sources are telling us that Crystal Palace still plan to go ahead with their club-record £48m deal to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves and that Wolves in turn will complete their transfer for Adam Armstrong - for £7m plus £2m from Southampton - to replace him.
Strand Larsen has completed his medical, but hasn't yet finalised terms and signed the contract.
If Palace have a change of heart and decide that, with Mateta returning to Selhurst Park, they don't need three strikers (with him, Eddie Nketiah and Strand Larsen) could they pull the plug late on the deal to sign the Wolves man?
And would Wolves in turn decide that, with Strand Larsen back in their squad, they don't need Armstrong?
Until the contracts are signed and registered with the Premier League, there will be nerves in South London, Wolverhampton and Southampton.
