Wright will join the Shrimpers on a free transfer after he mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Gillingham on Deadline Day.

It is also understood Wright turned down offers from a number of unnamed clubs.

Wright enjoyed an excellent 2016/17 campaign, netting 14 times in all competitions for Gillingham after being deployed in an attacking midfield role for the first time in his career.

It is understood a fallout between Wright and Gills manager Adrian Pennock led the player to ask for his contract to be terminated.

Pennock left Wright out of his matchday squad for the 3-3 draw against Southend in August, with Wright later denying claims he had refused to take his place on the bench.

"It's not for me to go into it right now but just remember always two sides to stories etc but yes I was fit and available today that's it," Wright said on Twitter.

"As said I can't say much but all I will say is I did not refuse to sit on the bench."

Wright, who has made 119 appearances at Championship level for Charlton, Scunthorpe and Millwall, had 11 months remaining on his contract at Gillingham.
