Will Grigg scored his first Sunderland goal as the Black Cats snapped a run of three straight draws and moved up to third place in League One with a 4-2 win over Gillingham.
Jack Ross's men looked like having another frustrating night as they were twice hauled back level by the visitors before half-time.
Lee Cattermole's fourth-minute opener was immediately cancelled out by Thomas Eaves, and Brandon Hanlan also lashed home for the visitors after Tom Flanagan had headed Sunderland in front.
But Sunderland stepped up the pace in the second half and secured victory via two spot-kicks, the first for Grigg in the 66th minute and the second swept home by Aiden McGeady with 13 minutes to go.
Sunderland's good night got better when Portsmouth, who had started the evening in third place, were held to a 1-1 draw at home by struggling Bristol Rovers.
Jonson Clarke-Harris put the visitors in front from the penalty spot after 37 minutes and after Omar Bogle's 58th-minute equaliser, Clarke-Harris missed after the Pirates were awarded a second penalty after 65 minutes.
The result means Pompey's run without a league win now extends to seven games.
Second-placed Barnsley extended their unbeaten league run to 13 but could not take full advantage as they were held to a goalless draw at home by Burton.
Cauley Woodrow and Jacob Brown both missed good chances in the second half on a difficult night for the Tykes, while the draw means Nigel Clough's Burton are now unbeaten in six.
AFC Wimbledon's great escape is gathering momentum after Joe Pigott completed a hat-trick deep into injury time to give his side a 4-3 win at Rochdale.
The visitors showed no ill effects from their FA Cup defeat to Millwall as they secured their second straight league win which moves them within five points of safety.
Pigott twice hauled his side back level after strikes from Rekeil Pyke and Ethan Hamilton for the home side, before Anthony Wordsworth shot them in front for the first time with 14 minutes to go.
Ian Henderson's 81st-minute equaliser looked to have rescued a point for the hosts before Pigott kept his nerve from the penalty spot in the sixth minute of injury time.
Goals from Billy Kee, Sean McConville, Jordan Clark and Luke Armstrong saw Accrington Stanley ease to a 4-2 win over Oxford, who replied through Luke Garbutt and John Mousinho.
