Torquay miss penalty to allow Morecambe to continue run

Morecambe kept their play-off hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Torquay. The Shrimps brushed past a spirited challenge from the Gulls to earn a vital three points and keep the pressure on the promotion pack. Sammy McIlroy's side started on the front foot and took the lead after just seven minutes with a goal from Paul Mullin. The striker scored from close range after Mark Duffy swung a corner into the near post. Four minutes later Torquay had a golden chance to equalise from the penalty spot when Scott Rendell had been pulled back by Morecambe keeper Barry Roche - who escaped with a yellow card when he looked certain to be sent off. To add to Torquay's frustration Nicky Wroe's penalty was superbly saved by Roche who flung himself to his left. The visitors then piled on the pressure with Morecambe skipper Jim Bentley making a superb last-gasp block to deny Rendell and Dave Artell blocking a near-post volley from Elliott Benyon. But as Torquay pushed forward they left gaps at the back and Morecambe made the most of them with an injury-time goal from substitute Craig Stanley.
