Hearts wasted the opportunity to go second in the Scottish Premiership table after they lost 2-0 away to Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

The Jambos could have climbed above Aberdeen with a point from their trip to Rugby Park but goals from Souleymane Coulibaly and Steven Smith secured the points for the hosts.

Coulibaly made his way past two Hearts defenders before drilling the ball into the far corner (22), with Tony Watt and Conor Sammon then seeing two goals disallowed.

But Smith's effort stood after he lobbed goalkeeper Jack Hamilton from 20 yards out to secure the points for Killie, with their opponents dropping to fourth after St Johnstone drew 1-1 with Rangers at Ibrox.

Second-half goals from Carl Tremarco, Lonsana Doumbouya and Liam Polworth secured a 3-0 victory for Inverness away to Motherwell.

The opening 45 minutes ended in a stalemate before the game came to life in the second period, with Tremarco getting things moving when he turned in Brad McKay's cross on 57.

Doumbouya then doubled the advantage 15 minutes later before Polworth fired home from 25 yards (83).

Louis Moult had a goal disallowed for the hosts but that was as close as they came to scoring as Thistle moved into the top six.

Dundee continue to struggle, however, with the Dark Blues remaining rooted to the bottom of the table after they lost 2-0 at home to Partick Thistle.

Ade Azeez headed against the crossbar before making the breakthrough after 29 minutes when he nodded in a cross from Abdul Osman to score his first goal of the campaign.

Azeez then set up Kris Doolan to score on 62 after he made the most of a mistake from Kevin Holt.

Celtic went seven points clear at the top of the table after they won 4-0 away to Ross County, although they had to wait until the closing stages before putting the match beyond doubt.
