Does being a Scotland fan go hand in hand with disappointment? It seems to have done for the last 20 years or so.

Just when it looked like the national side would reach the first play-off for a major finals since 2003, a somewhat familiar Scotland performance in Slovenia dashed all hopes of World Cup qualification.

The latest failure to qualify for a major finals has cost Gordon Strachan his job after the Scottish FA decided the national team needed "fresh impetus" going forward.
