Greg Docherty says he is aiming to surpass the achievements of fellow Hamilton youth graduates James McCarthy and James McArthur after his switch to Rangers.

The 21-year-old completed a move to Ibrox for a fee Sky Sports News understands to be in the region of £600,000 on Thursday and his former Hamilton boss Martin Canning believes Docherty has the potential to make the same kind of impact as McCarthy and McArthur.

The duo both started out at the SuperSeal stadium and won the FA Cup at Wigan before going on to star for Everton and Crystal Palace respectively, and Docherty, a lifelong Rangers fan, is determined to enjoy similar success after his move.

"They are the benchmark for Hamilton's youth system and you want to better them in a sense," the Scotland U21 cap said.

"Me coming here is a massive decision for me but hopefully I can kick on and play on a massive platform. It doesn't come bigger in Scotland than this place.

"I want to go and better what your McArthurs and McCarthys achieved and, for me, this is where it starts."

"If my debut doesn't come on Sunday I'm not going to be too disheartened with that," he said. "Today was my first time training with the whole squad - I only trained with some of the guys on Friday.

"I'm ready to bide my time if need be but if I am put in the firing line on Sunday, then I'm ready to go."
